Duke President Calls For Nifong To Step Down From Case

Duke University's newspaper, The Chronicle, has the details.

In response to Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong's decision Friday to drop charges of rape in the Duke lacrosse case, President Richard Brodhead questioned Nifong's conduct and called for the district attorney to relieve himself of his duties in the case.

Most reasonably decent people have already questioned the conduct of Mr. Nifong and called for his recusal. The question in this case is: Why has it taken so long for the Duke President to say something?

But I will take it one step further.

Any president of a major university, like Duke, has a lot of clout in the community. Why isn't he calling for the removal of Mr. Nifong, from office?

I understand that rape charges ar ebeing dropped. But, other criminal charges remain? What are they?

Anonim,

The two charges that remain are "kidnapping and sex offense". Sex offense can be any other sexual act, beside intercourse. (That's NC's interpretation.)

Isn't this saga just unbelievable? How many different versions of the attack has the accuser now told? She definitely remembered being raped before, but now she's "not sure"? Huh? That seems like something you'd remember. Especially if it's not the first time you've allegedly been gang raped. Of course, changing her story helps explain why not a strand of DNA was found on her. But it's not going to help her credibility on the stand. And that's bad news for the case, since her word is the only evidence against these accused. Not to mention that 2 of the accused can prove they were elsewhere at the time of the alleged attack. Or that the picture array she was shown to identify the attackers only contained fraternity members (the defense likens it to a muliple choice test with no wrong answers). And have you seen the video of the identification? "That looks like one of them," she says.

I have to say, this is one of the most unfair prosecutions I have seen in my entire life. Let me give Nifong a sliver of credit: he said if the accuser changes her story again, he might consider dropping charges. Gee thanks. At this point, I'm looking forward to a trial at which both he and the accuser are mercilessly embarassed before the world.

Am I the only one reminded of the infamous Tawana Brawley? The only thing I want to know from this woman is what her motivation is? Is it money?

Greg,

//Isn't this saga just unbelievable?//

Unbelievable is an understatement. This guy needs to be disbarred.
