Governmental Gait

I want the federal government's power stripped down to as little as necessary, just as much as the next man. But there are times when I think people want to take it just a little too far, too quickly.

This is a prime example.

South Carolina Rep. Mike Pitts has introduced legislation that would mandate that gold and silver coins replace federal currency as legal tender in his state.

You have to crawl before you can walk. Baby steps. then big steps. You can't run until you walk.

You cannot bite off too much, too fast. You will not be able to swallow it all and will need to spit it back out.

As long as we move in the right direction and make reasonable efforts to rid ourselves of the dead weight, we can restore that which has been lost for so many years. We must understand that too much shifting can and will over-correct the system..... and can have an overly shocking effect on it.

This act by Rep. Pitts is ridiculous. Maybe it can be revisited some years from now. But until the time is right, we must allow the system to absorb the changes we seek to make initially, or we will get a runoff.

I don’t mean to suggest opposition to gold/silver versus ‘certificates’ which are worth absolutely nothing. But I wonder … after becoming accustomed to debit cards, is the average American willing to carry fifteen pounds of gold coins in his pocket? Either way, I feel certain that muggers will like the new proposal.

Good point. I am betting on a an influx of muggers to SC.

Let's consider this: America is full of obese people...perhaps this is a way of also introducing ways of lowering the percentage of obesity in the country. Carrying fifteen pounds (or more if the person is a rich coot) of gold coins could really burn some calories...

I mean, if we are going to go the extremes, then let's really count all the benefits of doing so.

As far as muggers...how fast will they be able to run from the police with all those extra pounds of gold sloshing around in their pockets (not to mention the usual pants down at their knees bit)?

Not bad....not bad at all.

I'm thinking you will belong in the next government, once we get the problem creators gone...you can be a problem solver.

Let's not forget the frivolous lawsuit issue. Obese people running around with 20-30 extra pounds on them in the South Carolina oppressive heat of summertime could cause a record number "wrongful death lawsuits".

Seems to me it would be easier, once our country recovers from the hyper inflation the current government has set us up for, to just go back to the "gold standard" which should have never been disposed of in the first place. You are, of course, quite correct Sunsett, it is putting the cart before the horse. But South Carolina has been doing that since the beginning. Why change now?

I can always tell when someone reads Social Sense. It is a blog that seems to both encourage and facilitate a tendency to be preoccupied with lawsuits, like it's owner.

It doesn't have to be that way...I had Mustang on the way to a complete recovery, but he stiffed me on the co-payments and I had to drop him.
