Huckabee Record Troubling

I have resisted the urge to comment on the "holy war" now taking place in the GOP race, for awhile now. I have done this mainly because I couldn't care any less about religion as it applies to politics. And I definitely worry that the real issues are being overshadowed by the Dobson (and other evangelical) groups that want to drive the political train.

That said, here is a synopsis of Mike Huckabee's (the religious right's preordained candidate) past record, written by Deroy Murdock from the Hoover Institute. He is not a liberal and this is no hit job. So, it's good information to know before one jumps onto a bandwagon, uninformed.

The Republican presidential race has devolved into holy war. Former Massachusetts's Gov. Mitt Romney recently told voters he believes "Jesus Christ is the son of God and the savior of mankind." Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee subsequently asked a writer, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

How this will cut taxes or kill terrorists remains elusive. These theological niceties also distract from the urgent task of examining Huckabee's Earthly record. His background and positions should scare the hell out of GOP primary voters.

I like Huckabee's stance on the Fair Tax. As far as I can see, he is the only one that has come out openly for it. But, I will not throw out the baby out with the bath water, for any one issue that doesn't include national security as a major component. And frankly, some of what Mr. Murdock outlines here is truly troubling. Huckabee should be given a good look, but not to to rule in.

There are several that I have ruled out as someone I wouldn't vote for. So unless I find that I have seriously misunderstood any of these things, Mike Huckabee is now on this list.

SF posted an interesting commentary on religiosity in the American elections. I cannot disagree with anything he says—even as he overlooks the fact that people vote according to their belief system. According to Ann Coulter, all democrats are godless. Among republicans, we have two crackpots and an adulterer. I may have to go with the cootchie-cootchie man — at least until a candidate with brains pops up.

Some of the best people that have worked with (and for) me were adulterers. Luckily, there were no questions concerning marital fidelity on the job application they filled out.

I stare dumbly at the radio dial in my car when i hear poll results revealing Mike Huckabee's newest padding to his recent surge in the race...can't believe it. I was more than happy and content to allow for the fact that Rudy McThomney would lie and convince the republican mass that they were good christians all....but to hear s**t in presidential debates (i.e. would jesus do this/that?) that reminds me of sitting in church or youth group in high school (times i prefer to drop deep into the realm of forgotten memory of shame and confusion) makes me....i don't know....i hate to say it, but it makes me want to shake the collective scruffs of "christians" or "values voters" and lecture them on keeping their faith out of an arena of rational decisionmaking. Hehehe...wait....haven't had reason of any sort in washington for a looong time. So I don't know.

Yuck. Huckabee must have lost some brains when he lost all that weight. Or Chuck Norris highkicked him in the face.

...what's that?

Allan Keyes is running now!?!

Hi Mark,

//Allan Keyes is running now!?!//

Doesn't he always?

If the GOP runs Huckabee, I dare say they will lose in November.

if they run huckabee they will definitely lose. think they'll lose whomever they nominate.

I'm just hoping for a Ron Paul third party run to keep the momentum up for him...:)

what do you think of what's happening with the Paul campaign regarding his fundraising, increasing public notice, etc? Think i saw him tied with McCain at 11% in New Hampshire.

1. I think Ron Paul has been successful at fundraising because a lot of anti-war leftists have been giving him money to throw a wrench into the GOP race. That's not to say his base wouldn't give a fair share. But I doubt he could take in nearly as much as he has, without that demographic shelling out some money for subversive purposes.

2. Ron Paul would have a much greater chance of getting my support, if it weren't for the fact that he doesn't believe that we should be tracking down Islamofascists and killing them, before they kill us.

Meanwhile, Fred's been sneaking up while nobody's looking. It may be too late, but his smack down of the debate lady was classic.

Anything is possible between now and when the voting begins. But, right now it looks like it's between Huck and Romney, which is where values voters want the debate. It's media driven in some instances and in others, it's the Dobson bunch.

By creating a scene with these two, Giuliani isn't getting lot of coverage. Yet he's still hammering out his message, which id defined more as secular. The bulk of it centers on national security and the war on terror.

I have two proper nouns that should scare everyone in the GOP, into voting against Huckabee: President Obama.
