News In Brief (And The Usual Opinionated Commentary)

Here some news stories being circulated, after the big day:

Stocks Plunge During Inaugural Celebration

What a bash it was, but elsewhere was not all glitter.

The greater part of the stock market's performance on a given day is usually a reaction. Since all we heard on the news channels Tuesday was about the "historic" nature of this occasion, I wouldn't think it too hard to guess that at least some of this was in reaction to the uncertainty of our future.

Will President Obama spend like a drunken sailor and rubber stamp every piece of pork sent to his desk? It sure sounds like it. But after all is said and done, one must ask where all of this money is going to come from? That's what the stock market is asking.

Presidential Approval Ratings Soar

Much of the commentary, on most of the networks I heard, was reserved for the incoming President's numbers and the contrast with the outgoing's figures. But for anyone that cares to remember, nary a President has completely maintained their ratings for their entire term(s). Party has made little difference in this area, both Democrats and Republicans have left office with dismal numbers before Obama. Even Kennedy and Reagan (two of the most revered) were trending down, after such high percentages earlier on in their terms.

The Gaffemaster Takes His Oath

Joe Biden, who has put his foot in his mouth many times in his lengthy career, has taken the oath for Vice-President. I believe the man will entertain well, as he does not realize how much people will enjoy him a modern-day court jester. He loves to hear himself talk and he will not disappoint himeslf.

Even his wife can't keep her mouth shut. In the pre-inauguration promotion tour, she told Oprah that the new VP had his choice between Secretary of State and Veep. It was rather embarassing, because Obame had said that Hillary was his only consideration for that position.

My problem is not that she slipped up or that Mrs. Clinton's feelings are hurt. My concern is that if they can't keep the harmless things sensitive, how can we trust them not to spill the beans when something important comes along?

On Presidential ratings, note that Bush isn't the worst ever, as the crappy media likes to report. Truman was lower. And Truman is now regarded by most as one of the top 20 Presidents. I think Bush's legacy will be that he kept us safe from the enemy for 7 years by erecting an effective anti-terror structure. I think Bush will be remembered rather positively, if not as a great President.

And Obama has no where to go but down. He's already working on making us less safe by halting tribunals at GITMO. Imagine the following scenario: KSM goes to federal district court to face charges for 9/11, and his lawyers get the charges dismissed b/c of waterboarding. Now what, Mr. President?

It's much too early to judge Bush's legacy unless you are tempted to defend yourself against a rabid liberal press or blogs. What is the point of this and do you really care? Let time take it's course.

The libs and their Euro friends have been trying to blame everything on Bush. So let them do it and let's see how long the current honeymoon lasts as Obama will inevitably move to the center if he hopes to overcome this recession.

Secondly. Imagine that American troops are pulled out of Iraq by Obama and the country falls to Islamic extremists and becomes a hot bed of terrorists. Who will be laughing then. Not the left I can assure you.

LA. As per your comment on the stock market. The fluctuations are a daily occurrence and have little to do with who is in the White House at that particular day. I'm a bit surprised on your comment on this. Today for example stocks rose about 3+ %. Does that mean Obama is Lord? Let's look at the situation over a period of about 18 months before making these kind of knee jerk comments. Unfortunately the market may react emotionally but we must try to overcome our emotions when we explain it.

Imagine my surprise when I got home and found my mortgage statement in the mail. And here, I thought that would be taken care of. How silly of me.

Rocket,

My purpose of making my statement:

The greater part of the stock market's performance on a given day is usually a reaction.

When GM announces profits are off, the stock market reacts. When oil goes up like it did last year, the market reacts. As Obama took the oath, little else was reported, so I felt safe in assuming that the market reacted.

It was not my intention to tie everything that happens over the next few months to Obama. Like you, I think we'll know more over the next year and we will see what long term effects his policies will have. But I will stand by my statement that uncertainty over the future had to play a role in yesterday's downward turn.

I just got home and do not know the specifics on what the market did today. But I am not surprised that it did turn up a little. What it reacted to, I have no idea. But it had to be something. Speculation drives it.

The real terrorist is back in Texas, Greg. No worries. Seriously though, a good point with KSM. He had an unnoticed hearing on the day before inauguration where he acted like a crazy person.

It's a toss up whether he would demand the death penalty or fight for release if brought here. His ACLU lawyers would put Bush on trial to the delight of moonbats, which might be a reason they'll do it. They simply don't understand, but I hope Obama gets it soon when the intel briefings begin sinking in.

Secondly. Imagine that American troops are pulled out of Iraq by Obama and the country falls to Islamic extremists and becomes a hot bed of terrorists. Who will be laughing then. Not the left I can assure you.

Rocket, I'm 100 percent convinced that anything bad that happens in Iraq will forever be blamed on W no matter what BHO does. The media will assist.

The irony is amazing. While Obama works to delay justice for 9/11 victims and help the enemy, Democrats are studying how they can put Bush administration officials on trial. I tried to give this loser Obama a chance and he did just about the worst thing possible on his first day.
