Light Blog Alert

I want to take a moment to announce that I will not be blogging much over the next few days. (If at all) I do very much appreciate everyone's interest here at PYY, I hope you can keep the place warm by reading the archives or visiting someone on my blogroll.

I have a lot to do this weekend and thinking about blogging is not going to be at the forefront of my activities. I do hope to be back at it, somewhere around the first of the week.

Thank you all for reading and have a wonderful weekend.

lasunsett- i'm sorry to intrude a bit here on your site, but i had to take off during our discussion the other day and wanted to make one point.

of course, you are perfectly welcome to agree or disagree with my point of view, but i feel that you didn't quite understand what i was trying to say.

for me, bashing isn't about whether there is negative content in a comment, it's about whether an argument is defensible.

example: all americans are fat and stupid...this is a broad sweeping statement that can't really be defended.

counter-example: among industrialized countries, the u.s. has a fatter and less literate population...as unpleasant as this might sound, this is specific and you can find information to defend or dispute this statement.

bernard more or less stated that: 1) americans rally around their military rather intensely (compared to european societies, this is very much the case), and
2) our military has a losing record (unfortunately, since wwii, our military engagements have not had the greatest of outcomes, although one can debate this aspect)

although his comment is negative, it's not based on incorrect information or generalized stereotypes, so i don't consider it american bashing, just a negative point of view.

Ms. Miami,

The one difference that makes this whole debate a big waste of time:

GM's comment was a joke. It's highly probable that Bernard's comment wasn't a joke.

lasunsett- i hear you, but is that your criteria for determining whether something is bashing or not? whether the person means it as a joke?

i'm not trying to come off as a smart-ass, but i am baffled by your thought process.

also, i'm sorry to hear about your friends and family. i wish them the best.

To me, motives tell the story. I would rather do the wrong thing, with the right motive, than the other way around. I am not really that offended at what Bernard said, I know what he said isn't true. If he wants to say things like that, that's one of the reasons this country is so great, he can say it. The only reason I mentioned it to begin with was, to point out something I thought could be considered bashing, on the other end.

One thing you have to understand is, 50-something, former military men have different senses of humor, than (whatever age you are) women.

I personally worked (and drank) with soldiers of many different countries while I was stationed in Europe, back in the 70s. We all teased each other about each other's country, at times. No one got into a fight, no one got angry, we just laughed (and drank more). And we learned about each other.

i'm sorry to hear about your friends and family. i wish them the best.

Thank you, Ms Miami.

Although if someone asks you you may want to deny you know me for awhile, at least until this thing blows over. People around me aren't doing so well right now. Save yourself, save others. ;)
