Practicality and common sense from a great American. I love reading VDH. Thank you for the link, LAS.
BTW, I think McCain has been among the first politicians to see the need for common-sense compromise on immigration. This isn't like a lot of wedge issues where battle lines can be drawn b/w the left and right, and the debate can drag on for decades. Illegal immigration is a serious problem that needs a solution. Virtually all the Democrats I know are against open borders. Virtually all the Republicans I know can live with hard-working illegals becoming legal residents under certain circumstances. Let's get this thing done already!
This problem could be finally resolved within a period of 36 hours if the chief executive had any balls. He simply issues a shoot on sight order to take effect . . . 36 hours from now. Within that period, you can visualize millions of illegal aliens returning to their roots. Granted, it might not win the Nobel Peace Prize, but that wouldn’t be the purpose of the order to begin with. You see, there are easy solutions to complex problems.
Well, heavy punishments for small offenses did originate with the Athenians after all. If the Greeks gave us Democracy, they also gave us solutions; no one said they had to be popular solutions.
Hey, I'm only trying to help out here . . . Sheesh.
Unfortunately, the feds aren't going to do much this time around - at least it's not getting addressed much in the debates or the speeches. So, since it's the feds job to control thet borders and they are not, the states are going to have to do it at the level they are allowed to. Indiana is not only trying to set the precedent for voter ID laws, they are trying to dry up the source of jobs for illegals. It won't solve all of the problems, but it's a start.

Bitte schon, mein freund.
Happy New Year, LA!
The post you mentioned is quite interesting. The War on Terror has made this issue furthermore complicated.
Shah,
Happy New Year to you too, sir.
