UAE Now Claims Saddam Agreed To Exile Before War

From The Associated Press
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Saddam Hussein accepted an 11th-hour offer to flee into exile weeks ahead of the U.S.-led 2003 invasion, but Arab League officials scuttled the proposal, officials in this Gulf state claimed.

So. What I want to to know, is why the hell this wasn't brought to anyone's attention, before now? Did I seriously miss something here?

Let's read on:
We were coming (to the summit in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh resort) to place the facts on the table," said Sheik Mohammed, who is deputy chief of the Emirates armed forces and crown prince of Abu Dhabi.

"The results would have emerged if the initiative was presented and discussed. This is now history."

The anonymous Emirates official said Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa did not bring the proposal to the summit's discussion because Arab foreign ministers had not presented and accepted it as league protocol dictated.

At the time, Arab League leaders said the summit decided not to take up the idea, citing league rules barring interference in members' domestic affairs.

They all say they didn't want this war. But if that were the case, wouldn't you shelf the petty BS and try to solve the situation? If you were Saddam wouldn't you set it up and go? If you are the Arab League wouldn't you want to score points and solve the crisis before it becomes a war?

They did want this war.

If they didn't, they would have presented this as a viable alternative in the days leading up to the day of the invasion. They would used every diplomatic channel available to head off this action. Instead, we got a lot of "take it or leave it" stuff that was not acceptable.

The one thing that prevents diplomatic solutions when most Muslim nations are involved, is their stubborn refusal to compromise. They cannot go against what Islam teaches and are afraid of the reprisals that will surely occur, if they are ever judged by the Islamofascist groups to be infidels.

Don't kid yourself, the Arab League wanted this war for many reasons, even the "so-called" friendly ones. And that puts them in the same useless category as the U.N. and the E.U., corrupt and irrelevent.

LA,

Could one underlying motivation for the withdrawal of the offer to Saddam be what I refer to as "Arab tribal warfare"? Something else? As you pointed out They cannot go against what Islam teaches and are afraid of the reprisals that will surely occur, if they are ever judged by the Islamofascist groups to be infidels.

I notice that the summit was to be held in Sharm el-Sheikh. Probably not related, but just a few monts ago, that resort fell victim to terrorist attacks, on the "grounds" that it has become too Westernized.

A few years before 9/11, I had a neighbor from the UAE. In fact, the was the son of the ambassador. My neighbor made no secret that he supported Saddam Hussein. Furthermore, he despised Russia on ideological grounds, yet he pointed out to me that Russia was the best ally of the Arab states.

Another point here: Don't accept as fact what the UAE is now saying. Personally, I have a hard time imagining that Saddam would have fled Iraq. From his first days in power, he saw himself as "Nebuchadnezzar," the rebuilder of the Kingdom of Babylon.

I think one reason the "so-called" friendly nations wanted it was because they could empty out the thugs in their country to go fight jihad, in Iraq. Not in their country.

Sounds like a lot of baloney to me. And I wouldn't trust anything coming out of there anyway.

AOW, Russia is the best ally of the Arab states... sons of you know what...arming all of Israel's enemies. I think a big misstep of Bush was saying he trusted Putin.

LA,
Wasn't Mustang's contest fun?

You might be right about your theory as to ridding countries of jihadists. Some Arab nations do realize that they need to modernize. But the radicals forever will prevent that from happening, IMO.

Esther,
Only the desire to curtail the Islamists makes Putin of any value to the United States.

You're absolutely right about Russia. This has been true since at least the 1960's. You may know more of that history than I do.

This is just more smoke screen to try and paint the mid-east as "peace loving". None of them had any desire to be responsible for harbering Saddam.

Oh it was fun alright. Did he tell you the details?

I have a few points to make here:

1. Anyone who did't want to flee from Iraq, which is little more than a very large cat box, needs to have his head examined.

2. Along with the Real Estate axiom "location, location, location" is "timing, timing, timing." With respect to Iraq, in both instances, it could only be described as "crappy."

3. AOW once told me that an Arab will cut his brother's throat sooner than look at him; so then why should any Arab state act differently?

4. Now LA . . . I reached out to you as a brother. I offered "the person" who was my 5,000th visitor an all expense paid trip TO a Caribbean Island. Because I am a decent fellow, I extended that to include a RETURN trip. I even paid for your bride to accompany you. Now then, in return, all I get is sarcastic comments and . . . yes, admit it, rolling eyeballs from you and AOW. Now, if you don't want the trip, send the coupon to G . . . he'll fly on anything.

Semper Fi . . .
