The Wolf Doth Not Lie Down With The Lamb

My friend Mustang from Social Sense put up a post recently entitled Sheep Dogs. It is one of those e-mails that cannot be verified as being written by the author it is attributed to and he says so at the outset. But in my opinion, it does not invalidate the words contained in it. Give it a read, if you have the time.

I used to be a sheep dog.

Real or not, it's a powerful essay.

But, what about those of us who are sheep but still are acutely aware of the need for sheepdogs? What are we?

Also, I'm not sure I have the same attitude toward the average sheep as the Marine author. The average sheep who can sit down comfortably in front of their computer and write in all seriousness that bathtubs are way more dangerous than al Qaeda; the sheep high school students near my town who wrote a play about soldiers in Iraq that paints them as baby-killers; the left-wing adolescents at an anti-war protest in Washington State who burned soldiers in effigy and called them fascists. It's not "okay". It's vile. It's sad. It's frightening.

I guess I'd call myself an aware sheep, fully cognizant of the wolf and need for the dog. (just because a sheep is armed doesn't make them a dog).

The most striking part of his essay for me was the reference to after-effects from 9/11. Not only did we honor the firefighters, police and military for awhile, we also openly accepted prayer on government property and from our elected leaders. Conventional wisdom says Bush ended that by going into Iraq, but I think it would have faded on it's own--to a point of disparaging the troops fighting in Afghanistan.
