Merkel Says German Grand Coalition Likely

Click on the title for the complete Reuters article.

BERLIN (Reuters) - German conservative leader Angela Merkel said on Thursday she believed her Christian Democrats (CDU)were much more likely to forge a coalition with the Social Democrats (SPD) than they were with other parties.

"The possibility or likelihood of a coalition with the SPD is much higher than the other constellations," Merkel told reporters after a meeting with the liberal Free Democrats (FDP).

Let me go on record here and say that if there is a coalition between the SPD and the CDU, it won't last long. Since the end of WWII, the two major parties have been these two. All chancellors since that same time, have been from these two. They are adversaries by nature. They represent opposite philosophies.

Given this history and the nature of today's politics, if it does occur, it will not be a match made in heaven.

In a related note, check out the
short post at David's Medienkritik. It gives one example how socialist rule has affected Germany over the past seven years. (A lot of history can be revised during that amount of time.)

Schroeder has been in power since 1998. Since that time, Germany has taken a downward spin economically and in its relationship with the United States. Both Chirac and Schroeder have created an unholy alliance based on delusions of re-creating the neo-Holy Roman Empire, through the EU. As a result, both have made royal messes of their countries and part of that is due to the fact, they have assumed such an anti-American posture.
