Knowing how many people take these polls at face value is most troubling. How many people do you think stop and consider the sampling of such a poll? My guess is not many.
In this particular survey, we see that CBS/NYT stacked the deck. (Here it is in pdf form.)
Unweighted
Total Respondents - 1070
Registered Voters - 972
Dem. - 371
GOP - 295
Ind. - 306
Weighted
Registered Voters - 902
Dem. - 338
GOP - 263
Ind. - 301
Likely Voters - 699
You can do the math.
My concern is that we know CBS and the NYT have been in the tank for Obama from the outset. Who is to say they aren't intentionally skewing these numbers, because they want people that support McCain to think he has no chance on Election Day, and stay home?
CBS ranks 34th in median error and mean error, so putting a lot of confidence in this particular poll is not recommended.
Two polls that rank significantly higher in the accuracy department are Zogby and Rasmussen. Here are their most recent findings:
Rasmussen
Obama - 50%
McCain -45%
Zogby
Obama - 49%
McCain - 43%
(Note-Drudge is reporting that Wednesday's Zogby Poll will show Obama at 48% and McCain 44%.)
The bottom line here is simple. This election is not over until the official votes are cast, counted, and certified. Do not let anyone dissuade you from voting, because of these late season polls. They are not the ones that count.
It may be that Obama will win this election, I don't know. But if you fail to show up because of political stunts like CBS and NYT are pulling, it very well will be President-Elect Obama you see throwing the victory party.
This said, I call on Sen. McCain to get tough and debate smarter than his opponent or this nation will begin its descent into states of decay and despair, not seen since the days of Jimmy Carter.

Islam should be treated more sensitively by the media than Christianity, according to the director general of the BBC.
…/…
But asked whether it was correct that the BBC "let vicar gags pass but not imam gags", as Elton claimed, he admitted it did take a different approach to Islam, which has 1.6million followers in Britain, compared to its approach to the Church of England or the Roman Catholic Church.
Mr Thompson said: "My view is that there is a difference between the position of Christianity, which I believe should be central to the BBC's religion coverage and widely respected and followed.
"What Christian identity feels like it is about to the broad population is a little bit different to people for whom their religion is also associated with an ethnic identity which has not been fully integrated.

Hi Amerloque,
Meanwhile, back at the other ranch..
From CNN:
Businessman killed as attacks on Christians continue
//BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Gunmen killed a Christian businessman and wounded his nephew in a drive-by shooting in Mosul, police said Monday.
The shooting occurred Sunday night while the pair was standing near their house in the Kazraj neighborhood, Mosul police said.
It came on the same day that Iraq's president and prime minister condemned recent attacks targeted at Christians in the northern Iraq city.
Thirteen Christians have been slain in the past two weeks in the city, which is located about 420 kilometers (260 miles) north of Baghdad.
At least 900 Christian families have fled in recent days, reportedly frightened by a series of killings and threats by Muslim extremists ordering them to convert to Islam or face possible death, Iraqi officials said.....//
As you can see, the same courtesy is not extended when the roles are reversed.
LAS, you're a big time racist for even bringing this up. When Obamerica is President, you're going straight to a re-education camp to get fixed.
